Darren Hughes runs D Hughes Well Drillers, specialising in drilling and installing boreholes throughout the UK, and he is also vice chairman of The Well Drillers Association.

He purchased a dual view Laval R-CAM 1000 XLT borehole camera from Geoquip Water Solutions in 2019 and says: “It wins us a lot of work we wouldn’t normally get, usually because something has gone wrong and we need to get down there and identify the problem.”

WWT April 2020: Improving Efficiency - Energy efficiency boost for geothermal heating solutions

Read all about it -  Energy efficiency boost for geothermal heating solutions

As the cost of oil continues to rise and the drive to reduce carbon emissions intensifies, an increasing number of people and organisations in both the domestic and commercial markets are turning to geothermal solutions to make a difference to their heating bills.

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) can be used in a variety of settings, from a home environment through to commercial buildings, including factories, office complexes, hospital and schools.

When it comes to sporting facilities such as golf courses, staying on top of water management is essential.

The Renaissance Club, a private members club with an 18-hole golf course situated on 300 acres of the famous golfing coastline on Scotland’s Firth of Forth, hosts events including the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Opens 2019 & 2020.

Original drilling works, carried out when the course was constructed in the mid-2000s, had taken several attempts to find a borehole capable of producing the amount of water required, which meant reduction in flow was potentially a serious matter.

Water pump solutions for poultry farms - Case Study

Enabling efficient water transfer from storage tanks to poultry drinking lines during critical growth period

Ellis Whittal-Williams: “It’s important to have a system which can cope with a requirement for very small, slow amounts of water when the birds are very young, and allows you to gradually increase the flow and pressure as demand increases.

“As the sun comes up and the birds wake up, the demand for water will be higher. Having the Drive-Tech MINI enables us to run the pump constantly, instead of stopping and starting multiple times an hour. Less variants mean the pressure is more constant, resulting in a smoother operation with less wear and tear and increased energy efficiency".

Time to get boreholes ‘pumped up’ for summer

In the midst of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, it’s easy to overlook the fact that some things, like boreholes, still need attention.

During the winter months, irrigation systems will often have been mothballed, with pipes and filters drained down to avoid risk of water freezing and damaging the equipment.

That said, this January we largely enjoyed warmer than average temperatures, before being swamped by February’s seemingly unending rain.

Fast forward to April however and by mid-month some parts of the country have seen just 1% of the monthly average rainfall thanks to the dry and fine weather...
